Best Sage Alternatives for Performance and Employee Surveys

Sage HR charges extra for Performance, which is where its surveys live. Compare what that module gives you against dedicated performance and engagement tools.

If you are looking at alternatives to Sage, you are usually not trying to replace Sage. You are trying to work out whether its performance and survey features are enough, or whether the money would go further on a tool built for that job alone.

That is a narrower question than the roundups answer, and it has a real number attached to it. This guide starts with what Sage actually gives you, what it costs on top of your existing subscription, and where a module inside an HR platform stops being the cheaper option.

The short version. In Sage HR, surveys are not part of the base product. They live inside the Performance module, which adds £2.50 per employee per month in the UK, $3.25 in the US, on top of Core at £5.00 and $6.50. In Sage People, Pulse Surveys are capped at 10 questions and pricing is not published at all. Both are reasonable if you want goals, light 360s and an occasional sentiment check inside the system that holds your records. If employee listening is a real programme, compare the module price against a dedicated tool rather than against zero.

What Sage's performance and survey features actually give you

Sage sells two HR products and both include this capability, packaged differently.

Sage HR bundles it into one paid module called Performance, containing:

  • Goals and OKRs, objectives and key results with progress tracking
  • 360 feedback, which Sage describes as eliminating suspicions of bias by letting employees build a holistic view
  • Surveys, which Sage says can be set to be anonymous and completed on mobile devices, aggregating employee sentiment
  • Quick feedback and praise, a lightweight recognition prompt

Sage People, the 250 to 5,000 employee product, splits it differently. Performance sits in Performance and Talent Management with OKR tracking, continuous conversations, 360-degree feedback, 9-grid and skills matrices, which is a genuinely capable set. Listening sits separately as Pulse Surveys: up to 10 open or closed questions, scales, free text or dropdown, configured by an administrator, delivered in the Workforce Experience portal on a weekly or monthly cadence, with an NPS report grouped by question, business and function.

Two things worth saying plainly, because several published roundups get them wrong. Sage does run employee surveys, in both products. And Sage People has a real performance module, not a token one. If a comparison tells you otherwise, it has not read the documentation.

What it actually costs to turn performance and surveys on

This is the part most comparisons skip, and it is the part that decides the purchase.

Sage HR publishes its module prices. Per employee per month:

UK US
Core subscription £5.00 $6.50
Performance module (goals, 360, surveys, praise) £2.50 $3.25
Core plus Performance £7.50 $9.75
Timesheets £2.50 $3.25
Shift scheduling £2.50 $3.25
Expenses £1.25 $1.75

Sage People does not publish pricing at all. Its FAQ says cost depends on employee count, functionality and configuration, and routes you to a demo form with a call back within 24 hours. Implementation is described as a managed project with a dedicated project manager, a scoping phase and training workshops. Both are normal for a platform aimed at 250 to 5,000 employees. Both also mean you cannot compare it on price without entering a sales process.

The useful comparison is therefore not "Sage versus a paid tool". It is one paid add-on versus another paid tool, and at that point the question is simply which does more of what you need.

Where an HR module stops and a dedicated tool starts

Being fair about this matters, so here is the case for staying with the module first.

What the Sage module does better. It is already inside the system holding your employee records, so there is no second vendor, no second login, no employee list to keep in sync, and no separate procurement conversation. Goals and reviews sit next to the person's record. For a team that wants a review cycle and an occasional sentiment check, that convenience is worth real money and a dedicated tool will not beat it.

Where it runs out. Four places, consistently:

  1. Question depth. Sage People caps a Pulse Survey at 10 questions. That is right for a pulse and thin for a full engagement survey, which typically runs 25 to 50 questions across several themes.
  2. Anonymity mechanism. Sage documents anonymity as a setting you enable. Neither published description mentions a minimum number of responses before results become visible. A hard threshold is a different thing: it means a manager with a team of four cannot see results at all until enough people answer, which is exactly the case where people soften what they say.
  3. Benchmarks. Neither product's survey documentation describes an external or industry benchmark. A score of 7.2, or an eNPS of +14, means very little without one, and a board will ask what good looks like.
  4. Lifecycle coverage. Onboarding and exit surveys, triggered automatically from a start or leave date, are their own category and are not described in either product's survey documentation.

One honest caveat on points 2 and 3: those are statements about what Sage publishes, not proof of absence. Documentation lags products. If either matters to your decision, ask Sage directly rather than taking a comparison page's word for it, including this one.

On the price column. We show a figure only where we hold a dated, first-party source. Where we do not, the cell says so rather than repeating a third-party estimate as fact. Our method is on how we evaluate. One example of why it matters: a web search for Sage HR pricing returned a Core price a dollar below what Sage's own calculator says. Vendor pricing changes without notice, so check the vendor before you budget.

The best alternatives to Sage for performance and employee surveys

Every tool here runs alongside Sage rather than replacing it. Keep Sage for records, leave and payroll, and run the listening somewhere built for it.

FeedbackPulse survey builder showing pulse, eNPS and employee engagement templates alongside performance and peer review tools

1. FeedbackPulse

FeedbackPulse's survey builder, reused from the FeedbackPulse landing page.

A dedicated engagement and performance layer that sits beside whatever HR system holds your records. It exists for the gap a performance module tends to leave: survey depth, anonymity you cannot switch off, and a benchmark to read the score against.

Pricing: Free for teams up to 10 employees. Pro $4/employee/month billed annually, or $5/month billed monthly. Published, no sales call required. For comparison, Sage HR Core plus Performance is £7.50 in the UK and $9.75 in the US.

Key features:

Best for: Organisations of roughly 10 to 500 people that already have HR admin covered and want listening depth a module does not reach.

Honest tradeoff: FeedbackPulse is not an HR system of record. No payroll, no benefits administration, no leave booking, no employee records. That is a deliberate scope choice, and it is why this guide pairs it with Sage rather than presenting it as a Sage replacement. It also means a second vendor and a second login, which is a real cost the Sage module does not have. Organisations needing multi-week vendor security reviews or custom SLA negotiation should expect that on the sales-led Enterprise plan.

2. Culture Amp

The most established name in employee engagement, with a large research team and a deep validated question library. If your board wants a recognised brand behind the engagement programme, this is the one they have heard of.

Pricing: Culture Amp does not publish public pricing; all plans are quote-based and billed annually, with an estimated minimum annual spend around $4,500 (third-party estimate, 2026).

Key features: Validated survey templates, engagement analytics, a large benchmark set, separate Perform and Develop modules.

Best for: Larger organisations running a formal engagement programme with the budget for it, where survey science matters more than setup speed.

Honest tradeoff: Modular pricing means the engagement price is not the whole price once Perform is added, and the minimum annual spend puts it out of reach for smaller teams. Our Culture Amp alternatives guide goes deeper.

3. Lattice

Performance-led, with goals, reviews and engagement surveys in one product. The closest match if what disappointed you about Sage was the review cycle rather than the surveys.

Key features: Goal and OKR tracking, review cycles, one-on-one agendas, engagement surveys.

Best for: Teams whose primary gap is a structured performance cycle, with engagement second.

Honest tradeoff: Priced per module in practice, so performance plus engagement together is not an entry-level cost. We hold no verified current price for Lattice, so we quote none.

4. Leapsome

Bundles performance, learning and engagement, which suits organisations consolidating several tools at once rather than buying a listening tool alone.

Key features: Review cycles, engagement surveys, learning paths, competency frameworks.

Best for: Mid-sized teams replacing two or three tools in one move.

Honest tradeoff: The breadth is the cost. Bought for surveys alone, you pay for modules you will not use, and the configuration surface is larger than a single-purpose tool.

5. 15Five

Built around a weekly check-in rhythm and manager coaching rather than periodic survey cycles.

Key features: Weekly check-ins, one-on-one support, engagement surveys, manager training content.

Best for: Organisations trying to improve manager capability, not only measure sentiment.

Honest tradeoff: The weekly rhythm is the product. Teams that will not sustain a weekly cadence get much less from it than the price implies.

6. Workleap (formerly Officevibe)

The lightest option here, built around short recurring pulse questions surfaced to managers rather than an HR-led programme.

Key features: Short recurring pulses, manager-level reporting, anonymous feedback prompts.

Best for: Teams that want managers checking in regularly without a formal programme behind it.

Honest tradeoff: Limited depth on performance reviews and analysis. Closer in ambition to the Sage module than to a full engagement platform, which for some teams is exactly right.

7. Qualtrics Employee Experience

Research-grade survey design and statistical analysis, from a company whose core business is surveys.

Pricing: Quote only, no published list price.

Key features: Advanced survey logic, text analytics, lifecycle and 360 programmes, deep statistical tooling.

Best for: Organisations with a people-analytics function that will genuinely use research-grade tooling.

Honest tradeoff: Substantial overhead for a team without an analyst, and it does not run a performance review cycle. The most capable survey engine here and the hardest to run casually.

8. Workday Peakon Employee Voice

Continuous listening designed to sit inside a Workday estate.

Key features: Continuous listening, driver-based analysis, manager dashboards, benchmark comparisons.

Best for: Organisations already committed to Workday as the system of record.

Honest tradeoff: The value case leans on the surrounding Workday estate, so pairing it with Sage means paying for integration depth you will not use. No performance review cycle of its own.

If you actually want to replace Sage entirely

Everything above assumes you keep Sage for HR admin. If the system of record itself is the problem, that is a different project, and none of the tools above can do it. FeedbackPulse holds no employee records and runs no payroll, so it cannot be the answer to this version of the question.

The platforms that genuinely replace Sage are other HR systems: BambooHR, whose Core plan starts at $10 USD per employee per month, Pro at $17 and Elite at $25 (official pricing, captured July 2026), and where Performance Management is not included in the Core tier, a gap our BambooHR alternatives guide covers in detail. HiBob and Personio are the other two names that come up most for mid-sized international teams, with Personio strongest where the compliance centre of gravity is the EU. Workday is the step up rather than the step sideways, appropriate if you are outgrowing the 5,000-employee ceiling Sage People is built for.

Be clear-eyed about it. Replacing an HR system means migrating employee records, payroll and leave, and it is a months-long project. If the actual complaint is survey depth, that is a large solution to a small problem.

How to choose

Three questions, in order:

  1. Are you already paying for the Sage Performance module? If not, the comparison is not "free versus paid". It is £2.50 or $3.25 per employee per month against a dedicated tool, and the gap is smaller than most people assume before they check.
  2. Is listening a programme or an occasional check? An occasional check is what the module is for. A programme means lifecycle surveys, thresholds and benchmarks, and that is where a dedicated tool pulls ahead.
  3. Who reads the results? If a board or trustee group sees the number, you need an external benchmark to make it mean anything. Neither Sage product documents one.

If the answers point at a dedicated tool, the fastest way to find out is to run one real survey against your own team and compare what comes back with what your current module told you. The free plan covers up to 10 people, which is enough to see the difference.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sage HR include employee surveys?

Yes, but not in the base subscription. Surveys sit inside the Performance module, alongside goals and OKRs, 360 feedback and quick praise. Sage describes them as surveys that can be set to be anonymous and completed on mobile, aggregating employee sentiment to gauge satisfaction and engagement. So the answer is yes, and the more useful question is what the Performance module costs on top of Core and whether it goes as deep as you need.

How much does the Sage HR Performance module cost?

The Performance module adds 2.50 GBP per employee per month in the UK and 3.25 USD in the US, on top of the Core subscription at 5.00 GBP and 6.50 USD respectively (Sage pricing calculator, September 2026). Core plus Performance therefore runs 7.50 GBP per employee per month in the UK and 9.75 USD in the US. Recruitment is priced as a flat monthly fee rather than per employee. Check the calculator on the Sage HR pricing page before budgeting, since module prices change.

Does Sage People do employee engagement surveys?

Yes. Sage People includes Pulse Surveys of up to 10 open or closed questions, set up by an administrator and completed in the Workforce Experience portal, with an NPS report grouped by question, business and function. Anyone telling you Sage People cannot run surveys is wrong. The useful question is depth: a 10-question cap, and what the reporting gives you once responses are in.

What is the difference between Sage HR and Sage People?

Sage answers this on its own FAQ page. Sage People is for growing multinational organisations of 250 to 5,000 employees whose HR requirements are increasing in complexity, and Sage HR is described as the product for smaller businesses with fewer than 250 employees. Both include performance and survey capability, priced and packaged differently: Sage HR sells Performance as a per-employee module on top of Core, while Sage People does not publish pricing at all.

Should I add the Sage Performance module or buy a dedicated tool?

It depends how much of the module you will use. If you want goals, light 360s and an occasional sentiment check inside the system that already holds your records, the module is the simpler purchase and there is no second vendor to manage. If employee listening is a real programme, with lifecycle surveys, enforced anonymity thresholds and external benchmarks to read scores against, a dedicated tool goes further. Compare the module price against the dedicated tool price rather than against zero, because the module is not free either.

Can you run a survey tool alongside Sage instead of replacing it?

Yes, and that is the usual arrangement. Keep Sage for employee records, leave and payroll, and run listening and reviews in a dedicated tool beside it. Setup means importing a list of people and sending a survey, not migrating an HR system. Replacing the whole platform because the survey depth disappointed you is a large solution to a small problem.

Do Sage surveys have an anonymity threshold?

Sage documents anonymity as a setting. The Sage HR performance page says surveys can be set to be anonymous, and the Sage People help centre lists anonymize responses as a survey option. Neither published description mentions a minimum number of responses before results are shown. That is a different mechanism from a hard threshold: FeedbackPulse withholds results until at least three people have replied, and an administrator cannot switch that off. Check current behaviour with Sage directly if this matters to your team, since documentation can lag a product.

Which Sage alternative for performance and surveys has a free plan?

Of the tools compared here, FeedbackPulse has a genuine free tier covering up to 10 people and 5 active or scheduled surveys with no credit card. Sage HR offers a 30-day free trial rather than a free tier. The enterprise-tier platforms in this category are quote-based and do not offer free plans.
